Otter Tail County is accepting applications for an Accountant position.  

The purpose of this position is to perform the accounting function for an assigned area or service team.  Work is generally limited in complexity to a specific type of task or department, but requires independent judgement.  Accountants are responsible for examining, accounting for, reconciling, analyzing, and interpreting accounting data and records.   Assists in performing the more difficult and complex journal entries.  Responsible for transactions and accounting reconciliations to ensure compliance with complicated regulatory requirements (e.g. cost accounting, human services accounting, GASB lease and SBITA accounting, asset accounting, HUD, etc.).  

This position will focus on Accountant tasks for the Housing Redevelopment Authority including accounting and financial reporting for housing program funds.  The position will also provide broader support for other general accounting areas within the County.

Examples of Duties


  • Prepares reports for internal use and external regulatory submissions
  • Submits regulatory reports
  • Assists with audit preparation
  • Composes correspondence
  • Provides information in accordance with data privacy regulations
  • Assists with budget preparation and monitoring
  • Creates cash basis adjusting journal entries
  • Creates modified and full accrual journal entries related to GASB requirements
  • Regulatory reporting and accounting, including year end accrual entries
  • Performs filing/records retention
  • Performs complex GASB related analysis of leases, SBITA, assets
  • Reviews regulatory and grant reporting, and accounting transactions for accuracy and compliance
  • Researches recommended practices and recommends process improvements to supervisor, as assigned
  • Serves as lead on implementing new software as assigned
  • Prepares regular reports and analysis for Board of Commissioners or Administration
  • Performs General Ledger maintenance
  • Administers County Wide Credit Cards, Gas Cards, Amazon Accounts, etc.
  • May act as team lead in the absence of direct supervisor.
  • May also assist with duties such as passport application processing, permits, website maintenance, and elections
  • May assist with duties and responsibilities as outlined in the County Emergency Operations Plan and Continuity of Operations Plan
  • Performs other duties as assigned


Minimum Qualifications


  • Bachelor’s degrees in Accounting, Business Administration or related field (Preferred)
  • Two years of related accounting/bookkeeping experience 
  • Associate’s degree or two-year technical certificate in Accounting, Business Administration or related field will be considered
  • Any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Driver’s License valid in the State of Minnesota

This position is regularly scheduled to work 40 hours per week, Monday - Friday, 8:00 - 4:30 pm.  the 2026 starting salary for this position is 29.69 hourly, depending on qualifications, with career advancement to $44.53.
